Internship at the McMullin Design Group

Internship

Join MDG for an educational Internship.

An internship at The McMullin Design Group is the first step to understanding how an overall design office works and your role as a new designer in the industry. MDG has been hosting paid interns since 2007. Our goal has always been to introduce new designers to a professional setting.

Daily Duties and Skill Set Goals upon completion of Internship include:

  • Professional communication skills via phone and e-mail
  • Knowledge of technology
  • Organizational skills: Responsibility to keep office, Design Library and projects in order
  • Communication with vendors
  • Ability to complete a design project from concept to completion
  • Ability to read and spec from price-lists
  • Knowledge of purchasing and order detailing
  • Ability to complete a site survey
  • Knowledge of CAD
  • Ability to assist and complete client installations

Each designer’s individual skill set will be assessed during the internship to determine how far into the design process they will go. The more you catch on the more we can teach you!  All interns will get to attend client & General Contractor meetings pending schedules.

Our goal is to introduce you to the everyday experience in a design office, get you comfortable with navigating the terrain, and offer insight into all the different aspects of the design field and the job opportunities that are available to you within a typical design office setting. We guarantee your skillset will grow and your horizon will widen.  Ideally, we like our interns to stay on full-time if a position is open at the end of the internship or the student’s graduation.

Testimonials from Our Interns:

“I started my internship in August 2017. Before I accepted my internship with McMullin, I had also accepted one with a firm closer to the Jersey Shore. Both internships were valuable experiences, but MDG challenged my skill set and allowed me to seamlessly grow into my associate designer position. My main role as an intern was assisting the purchasing department 2-3 days per week. Day-to-day responsibilities included: opening and inspecting packages, filing purchase orders and following up with vendors for order updates. This allowed me to quickly become an integral team member and ease the workload of the lead designers. When I graduated in the summer of 2018, I was brought on full-time! My deep understanding of the back-of-house operations made my transition into designing much easier. Over the past 5 years, I have been able to sharpen a broad skillset that encompasses the entire design process from start to finish.”

“I am lucky I got the opportunity to work with Bridget and The McMullin Design Group! I learned a lot working there after class in high school and during my breaks. Everyone there is very professional, welcoming and helpful with all my questions. I am taking this knowledge with me as I begin my interior design program in college. I will take what I learned with MDG through my career!”
