This client loved their home but knew it was time for a refresh. The home was an ‘80s contemporary style with a traditional kitchen “upgrade” that didn’t match the existing architecture, didn’t address the general flow of the floorplan, and wasn’t compatible with the client’s lifestyle. The kitchen was not part of our original space planning, but as the design team got deeper into their work, we realized the limitations of the existing kitchen. If we didn’t update it, we wouldn’t be able to fulfill the client’s vision.

We modernized the existing layout by creating clear sight lines from the living room to the family room, relocated the powder room door for added privacy, and removed the kitchen slider to create a better flow throughout the workspace. With a new, slightly smaller kitchen design we were able to add a butler’s pantry and a dedicated dog crate room which provided plenty of bulk storage for this family of five. Their new, contemporary kitchen is now the true heart of the home and sets the vibe for the first floor.

The MDG team made a few other architectural upgrades to the first floor including the removal of a glass block wall from the dining room. This created a clear sightline from the front door to the property’s expansive outdoor deck and yard. We also added new railings and light fixtures in the entryway and updated the small full bath with a pocket door for better accessibility for the client’s aging parents. The client knew they would likely need to care for their parents in the future, so we designed the family room with the capability to convert into a bedroom when needed.

The client’s extensive art collection became the inspiration for their living room and dining room designs, featuring neutral colors, textures, and patterns. We took a cue from their South Park & John Lennon artwork for the family room, adding a hipper vibe with graphic wallcovering and mod drapery panels ideal for a space to unwind and enjoy some games or TV.

This client now feels their home truly reflects their style!
